Trent Hamm on Haircuts and Frugality

I don’t really think it’s “cool” to go to a salon or a barbershop and wait for long periods. I don’t think it’s particularly “awesome” to spend $15 minimum to have someone else use a pair of scissors when I’m fully capable of doing it myself.

As a fully functional human being, I’m quite capable of standing in front of the bathroom mirror and using hair clippers and scissors to make my hair look decent.

Not what we believe in.

Capability and competence are two different things. The purpose of delegating, or outsourcing, is to free up time and energy to focus on what makes you awesome.

P.S. To be fair, Trent is not alone in his way of thinking. I leave you with my all-time favorite Dwight Schrute quote:

Why tip someone for a job I’m capable of doing myself? I can deliver food. I can drive a taxi. I can, and do, cut my own hair. I did however, tip my urologist, because I am unable to pulverize my own kidney stones.

I am of two minds on this one, but my bald head wins out. I find a few minutes with the clippers every week or so keeps me in good order. I calculate my savings over the years to be in excess of one million dollars.

OK, maybe not that much, but it does add up!

I actually considered adding the bald-man caveat. That’s hard to argue with. There is really only one result and anyone can indeed achieve it. :)

But here’s the real question: do you tip taxi drivers?

  • Anonymous

Yes, but primarily because I believe the many of them are armed!

And I learned long ago to never piss off a waitress . . .

There are some people who do not have the time  for it because of their hectic schedule and others are just lazy to do it.

I could cut my own hair but don’t and don’t. It would end up looking terrible and uneven and I have no idea how anybody would cut the hair at the back of their head when they can’t see it properly (unless they use clippers and have the same length all over of course).

The place I go is a decent price (£10 in the UK), rarely has a queue and is fast.
