As I’ve said time and time again, I spend a ridiculous amount of time in front of a computer. I’m also a huge “tinkerer” when it comes to new applications and services, so I’m always curious to see what the next big thing will be, particularly in the social media and productivity arenas.
This type of curiosity means I get me some beta invitations. Lots of them. And, most of the time, when you sign up for a private beta of an app or site, you’ll eventually be given a handful of invitations to share with your friends. Well, today I will disperse my beta invitation inventory to you, my loyal readers and friends.
Here’s a list of all of the products I have beta invitations for, including the number of invitations for each. Peruse the list and, if you see something that interests you, there are instructions at the end for how you can get your hands on them.
- BrightKite (3 Invites) - Location-based social networking with an iPhone-friendly interface. Let’s you “check in” from different locations (home, work, the bar, the clown college, what-have-you) so that local friends can know where you are. Also allows you to post regular messages (a la Twitter) and pictures. Fun service that has gained some serious traction among the Twitter crowd (follow me here if you’re already a member)
- Evernote (15 Invites) - Far and away my favorite new(-ish) productivity app is Evernote. Think of it as a digital junk drawer for your thoughts and other random bits of info (website logins, bits of code you want to check out later, pictures of that weird package of dog treats you saw at the grocery - stuff like that). The greatest part - it runs on OSX and Windows (as well as a full-featured web version) and syncs between all 3. The benefits are too many to list here, so go check it out. Seriously, this app kicks ass. Seriously.
- Dropbox (5 Invites) - This app allows you to share files between multiple machines. Once you install the client (OSX or Windows), it creates a folder that it syncs with the web, as well as any other computers where you have the client installed. Works great for moving big files from work to home or vice versa.
- SocialThing! (14 Invites) - A very slick aggregation service for all of your social networking apps (Twitter, Flickr, Pownce, and Del.icio.us just to name a few). Works a lot like FriendFeed, except without the ability to comment (but the interface more than makes up for this missing feature, which it does just fine without if you ask me).
- Plurk (Free, No Invite Required) - Plurk gets an honorable mention, thanks to its being rocketed into the limelight as a viable alternative to Twitter during their recent availability woes. The interface definitely takes some getting used to, but I really like the conversational aspect (conversations are threaded so you can follow them easily, link to them directly, etc. - something Twitter doesn’t offer). Oh, and their iPhone interface is fantastic!
So, there they are, close to 40 invitations to several new and exciting services on these tubes of ours. Now, if you want in on any of these, here are the rules:
Comment
Yep, just leave a comment. Now, because of the new Disqus commenting system I’m using here, I’m not able to see the email address you use when posting a comment. The way we’re going to get around this is for you to leave a comment with which invite you’d like, then send me an email here and include a link to your comment. Once I get it, I’ll send over your invite with the quickness.
Oh, and in order to keep things fair and above board, I’ll only issue one invite per person. Also, these are first come, first served, so you’d better get to work because these things will probably dry up pretty quickly
And don’t forget to add me as a friend on Twitter - I’m really funny and interesting, I swear.
[UPDATE] - BrightKite and Dropbox invites are gone, but I still have a handful of Evernote and SocialThing invites.
