i use the service ://URLFAN and their Buzz Radar which to me is more transparent in regards to whats going on the blogosphere

http://www.urlfan.com/site/buzz_100/600.html

urlfan crunches all the data from over a couple million rss feeds and tracks what's moving in the blogosphere. there's no human intervention so it's able to float top stories faster than the standard vote up/down digg and reddit use. according to alexa, urlfan is about to overtake reddit in terms of reach and rank.

Angela, what are you talking about? To create a link in a Metafilter comment or post, you type the text (e.g., Here is a picture of penguins), click on the "link" button to the bottom right of the comment box, and paste the URL. Or you can use regular old HTML, i.e. Google

Yes. That linking system did require conscious thought to understand. Intuitiveness and simplicity is really the best thing for websites.

Most of the links i saw on the front page that interested me were links that I'd already read that day on reddit.

I don't think theres any answer to creating an idiotproof website. When something becomes widely trafficked, the culture gets diluted and what it originally was is lost. You can't change that.

All you can do is hone your early adopter skills to always be on the lookout for the new stuff that hasn't been discovered yet.

Now if only MetaFilter didn't use the pain in the butt linking system they do. [This link](http://example.net/)is an [example](http://example.net/) of [what](http://example.net/) [I](http://example.net/) [mean](http://example.net/).

I'm not sure that the metafilter comments and submissions are any better than those at reddit. Its layout isn't as clean as reddit's is, however. It comes across as cluttered, and submissions end being short articles themselves, and not very well put together for the most part.

Nominal subscription fees aren't a bad idea.

Digg, Wikipedia, Reddit, and a lot more sites, are just full of self-important 12 year olds who want praise for their ability to string together combos of Google searches and paste what they find into a text editor. Who the hell would waste their time on a site like that instead of, I don't know, something productive?
