I totally agree and follow by daily habit your advice on being nice, however; I can't follow this advice in any way shape or form when dealing with the people whom it should matter most... my family members and loved ones. Any suggestions? I also see my children following the same patterns, rude to each other, but kind to friends.

Author Tom Bodett has a wonderful chapter in his book "As Far as You Can Go Without a Passport" celebrating "People Who Notice Things." Like the busy lady with a cart full of groceries and three kids in tow who lets you cut in front of her in the grocery line with your bread and milk; like the guy who sees that you are trying to merge into traffic and lets you in. Looking for ways to make life a little easier for those around us can easily be worked into a busy day and is a great stress reliever for the "people who notice things", not just for those around them.

Buying someone a coffee is one of my favorite ways to meet new people. Sure, you get lots of stares, but it really makes some people's day. (I have yet to have a stranger buy me a cup of coffee, although more than one barista at Starbucks has waived my money aside because they've gotten to know me so well!)

Great list! One of the best things I've done in a while is buy coffee for the receptionist here at work. She was so excited that we asked! And you can't forget the importance of the support personnel at any job.
