We’re Back!
For a reasons I don’t know, I decided to upgrade Wordpress (the software the drives this here blog) yesterday. Anybody in the software business knows that you don’t make any large changes (like big upgrades) on Friday because you don’t want to spend all weekend fixing it if (read ‘when’) it breaks.
Well, it broke. The site was down for quite some time (around 24 hours, I’d guess) due to a small glitch with the new Wordpress and my webhost’s environment. Because of the nature of the error, it wasn’t something I could easily or effective debug. I was actually unsure how to proceed when it was magically fixed (presumably by my webhost’s staff).
So, all that is to say that we’re back up and running. Apologies to anybody who tried to get here, but couldn’t. See you soon!
Google Maps Hack - Include the Journey Home
Being the total and complete Google fanboy that I am, Google Maps is where I typically turn for all of my mappy needs. I realize there are tons of other options, but Google’s directions are pretty consistently accurate - plus the application is just easy and fun to use.
Sidekick iD: Cell Phone Accelerated, But Somebody Forgot the Wiper Fluid
For the last year or so, I’ve been carrying around a Motorola RAZR as my primary mobile communication module (what mere mortals might call a “phone”). Honestly, it got the job done, but I was never in love with it. The form factor was awesome if you just kept in your pocket the whole time and never had to perform a two-handed operation while talking on it. The camera was pretty much a hunk of crap - and don’t even get me started on the “video camera” (I say it that way because I’ve made better movies out of stacks of cocktail napkins and some crayons).
A few weeks back, it started to fritz out on me. The signal would dip to unacceptable levels (even in areas where the signal used to be great), or sometimes drop off completely - especially at my office. It would stay in this disconnected state until I restarted it, which I was doing about 5-10 times per day, on average. It sucked.

Happy Talk Like a Pirate Day!
Turn Your Daily Drive From Madness to Manageable

Living in southern California, traffic is as common and everyday as the sunrise. Assuming normal “work” hours (9-5, so to speak), just about any freeway in the land will be packed to the gills with cars during rush hour (which is a funny name, if you think about it - nobody is actually rushing anywhere). Yes, and I am one of those people who spends almost 2 hours per day in the car driving to and from work. And unless I manage to become independently wealthy or get a job around the corner from my house, this is how it’s going to be for the foreseeable future.
Friday Fun: Toddler Monster Beat-Down
This is a little girl. She’s going to tell you how she’s going to deal with any monsters that roll into her crib (no pun intended) uninvited…
You Know, I’m a Terribly Interesting Guy…
And for that reason, I know all of you are just itching to chew the fat with yours truly.
So, being the benevolent, emotionally available blogger that I am, I’ve added a couple Meebo widgets to this here blog that give you, my dear reader, immediate access to me. Check the left hand side of all the pages on this site, or you can use the big boy on the contact page.
Please feel free to say “hi”, “you suck” or whatever you’d like. I’m typically on during business hours (Pacific Time), but you can leave me a message even if I’m not on.
Cheers!
No Will Power, No Resolve
So, for some reason unknown to me, I’ve taken a huge swig of the Twitter Kool-Aid once again (despite a rather poetic break-up). My head is hanging low, believe me…
How to Backup *All* of Your Data for Pennies per Month

Every so often when I’m out running errands on the weekends, I’ll catch a radio talk show dealing with technology (users call in with questions, etc.). I swear I can’t get through an hour of this show without the subject of data backup coming up at least once (or perhaps the entire hour will be spent covering different backup strategies). It’s safe to say that most people don’t properly backup their information and personal files, despite the myriad of available applications.
I think it’s because the solutions come in one of two forms:

How to Deal with Babies (that Aren’t Yours)

Immediate after the birth of both of our two children, my wife and I would have family and friends pop by to take a gander and the new addition. The room would be billowing with “awwww”s and such, as you’d expect. But for 90% of the people visiting, the question “would you like to hold the baby?” was met with shock and extreme apprehension. The thought of “doing it wrong” or dropping the baby was enough to dissuade these fine folks from taking part in one of the most miraculous events this life has to offer.
The fact of the matter is that the vast majority of young people (who aren’t parents) are scared to death of holding and otherwise caring for infants. I would have definitely counted myself among this lot a mere 2.5 years ago, so don’t think I’m picking on anybody. The truth is, babies (while definitely fragile) aren’t as breakable as you might think.
With all that in mind, I’ve compiled a list of a few misconceptions/tips for dealing with babies:
