How you handle requests like this impacts the relationships you have with people. There&#039;s a four-step process to effectively assert yourself that won&#039;t damage your relationship and, in fact, might strengthen it:
1. State the problem: &quot;John, I can&#039;t fix the problem right now.&quot; (It would help to show some empathy here.) &quot;I understand you&#039;re up against a wall.&quot; (By saying it this way, I avoid using the word, &quot;but.&quot;)
2. Describe the impact: I have to be in a budget meeting this afternoon and I&#039;ve already committed to two other tasks this morning.&quot;
3. Offer a solution: &quot;Why don&#039;t you ask Brett?&quot; Or, &quot;If you&#039;ll give me until next Tuesday, I&#039;ll have it fixed by then.&quot;
