Email has been around long enough that there is not a widespread mistrust. They are just "checking" because they want an answer now, or they want you to do something now. "Checking to see that you got it" is a metaphor for "I realize you have a certain set of tasks and a timetable for those things but obviously mine are more important. So could you help me with my task right now and get back to your stuff later?" The reason people walk over to confirm that you got an email is not to make sure it got there. Email has been around long enough that there is not a widespread mistrust.
