car seat a mirror a definite must. We also relied very heavily on a book called "what to expect during the first years" or something like that.

Oh, we love the Bumbo seat too. The critter loves it and I think it helped him learn to sit a bit early. He sits in it while Mom is getting ready in the morning.

Well, different strokes for different folks. The Cranky Product Manager was fortunate enough to have a low maintenance baby, at least with regard to temperature. He did not care for warm bottles nor warm wipes, thus the wipe warmer and the bottle warmer/sterilizer was useless.

But the Cranky Product Manager must ask - why are you keeping your baby wipes in the freezer? :-)

Bottles, though, were a different story. The Cranky PM tried them all, and the only ones tha encouraged more eating than screaming were the Dr. Brown bottles. Lots of pieces, pricey, but it reduced feeding time from over 1 hour for 5 oz to 20 minutes for 8 oz.

Further, the Cranky Product Manager tried that backseat mirror. But it kept falling down, making the CPM fret about it one day landing on the baby's head. It was returned to immediately.

Other things the Cranky Product Manager found indispensible:
1) A good changing table at the right height with supplies in easy-to-reach drawers, because you do a LOT of bonding with your child while changing him 10 times per day.

2) Sleep sacks.

3) Onesies - agree with you 100% here.

4) The Oceans Wonder Aquarium lullaby machine thing that attaches to the crib. The kid loves it and it puts him to sleep.

5) A baby carrier. Much more convenient then a stroller because it leaves both hands free to do things.

6) Car seat. 'nuff said.

7) Baby bath. The CPM is disagreeing with you here. She did not want to get one, but as her son became squirmier and bigger, he did not fit in the kitchen sink anymore, but she couldn't control him adequately in the big tub. So, for safety, she went and bought a basic tub. No heated seats.

Ditto on the mirror thing...

With a newborn at home ourselves, I think I would have to add that some kind of bouncy seat (bouncer?) is a necessity - especially if you have a second, toddler-aged kid you may have to chase around.

Sadly, we had bad luck with the drop-in bottles with our son and bought a bunch of Dr. Brown bottles. The verdict? Expensive. Gimmicky. Hard-to-clean. But we've had a serious gas reduction.

YMMV! Great post, Brett!!

About the mirrors. We received the one we registered for and after getting our car seat inspected, were told that they are unsafe as they are a potential projectile in an accident. Being the paranoid first time parents that we are, we promptly returned it.

Hey Brett, thanks for the mirror! :P

While not for newborns.... it won't be long before your infant is ready for a Bumbo seat. These seats are AWESOME. I tried the Bebe Pod as well but it didn't hold the baby as securely as the Bumbo.

You'll thank me!
