Combining Your Wallet and Hipster PDA with the Moleskine Memo Pocket

Hipster/Wallet Top View

[Edit] A special welcome to all the visitors from lifehack.org - thanks for stopping by!

As previously mentioned, my lovely wife bought a Moleskine Memo Pocket for me for Christmas. After carrying it around in my non-wallet back pocket for about a week, I started to get a little bothered by how cumbersome it was, especially given that the particular pants pocket carrying the Moleskine is normally vacant. I was a little annoyed that it was looking like my new productivity pr0n would go largely unused due to lack of portability. Then, an epiphany…

After looking at my wallet and considering the large amount of superfluous stuff in it, I realized that I could probably fit the necessary wallet contents into the two spare pockets of the Moleskine. It fits nicely into my wallet pocket and isn’t really any bigger than my previous wallet. The best part is, I’m now able to keep my hipster on me and ready without having to change my “stuff to carry at all times” list. Now my wallet is just slightly bigger (and more valuable).

For those interested, a quick run-down of the contents of each pocket (6 total, starting with the front):

  • Blank Index Cards (so they’re the most accessible)
  • To-Be-Processed
  • Next Action Lists
  • Agendas
  • Frequently-Used Wallet Stuff (cash, credit cards, etc.)
  • Less-Frequently-Used Wallet Stuff (receipts, other card-like things).

Give it a try, the Moleskine makes a damn fine wallet+hipster!

[...] Another interesting hack I spotted comes from The Cranking Widgets Blog and involves using the Moleskine Small Memo Pocket along with a Hipster PDA as a wallet. It’s a pretty neat idea, keep your spare index cards as well as some cash and important cards in one spot. I’ve been experimenting with a Hipster this week and while it won’t replace my Moleskine it certainly can be a great tool. This hack provides a great way to incorporate it with your wallet and cut down on what you usually carry. [...]

I have been using this as a wallet for a couple of months now. I find it works great. I would like to incorporate a index card holder for the outside of the Moleskine so that I could write on it without opening it. Make sense? I am still using Google Calendar though, as I would rather do this than carry 2 hipster devices.

Todd, I do just that. I use photo mounting corners. You might want to reinforce with duck tape but I just replace occasionally. You can also add a 2 more holders in this way to the inside front cover. Here I find Just 3 corners is fine & easier to change the card. I found this pen (the ballpoint) fits in the spine

I use it as wallet, capture, errand list only.
